Best F(r)iends: Vol. 2

from noir to western

In 2017, as post-production on Best F(r)iends was underway, we began showing a private screener to close colleagues for creative input, insight and critique. The cliffside scene that now concludes Volume 1 was an interesting pivot point for these early few viewers. Several of them though the film was ending. In many ways, this substantiated our own internal producers’ conversations; the decision was made to split the story into two volumes. Not only did this allow for a lot of unused footage to be incorporated back into the saga, it also enabled us to tell the story from two slightly different perspectives. Volume 1 became a sort of film noir, a macabre love-letter to Los Angeles and vintage cinema. Volume 2 took on more of an old-school western flavour, with more prominent focus on our loveable, if devilish, cowboy character, Uncle Rick, played by the superlative Rick Edwards. The 2-Volume format also made for a fun way to engage independent theatres and audiences alike, building anticipation and excitement for all.
